The responsible development of Marcellus shale depends on managing risk with strict regulations. Every single part of the natural gas production process – from well site planning and development to drilling to pipeline construction to waste management and site restoration — is monitored by some combination of over a dozen state and federal agencies and commissions, including the Environmental Protection Agency, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protections, the Susquehanna River Basin Commission and more. Mandated tests and protections for air, water, land, wildlife, workers, and residents are of utmost priority.
